Vanderpool Ride

August 31 Hill Country Ride

Fourteen riders met at the Tejas Barbacoa in Helotes at 9AM for breakfast.

A prompt 10AM departure along Hwy 16 into Bandera, TX, stopping for a quick break there.  Then continuing along Hwy 16 outside Bandera, taking FM 470 towards Utopia.

Along the way we rolled thru Tarpley where the town was preparing for their Labor Day parade, which we almost became a part of.  Taking FM 187 south into Utopia then FM 1050 west towards Garner State Park.  Hitting US 83 north a few miles into Leakey, stopping for gas.  There’s a new Texaco with pumps a plenty, after gassing we stopped at the local refreshment stop, Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop, on FM 337 west for a short break.

Leaving Leakey east on FM337, hit a few miles of road construction, which required slower speeds but was very navigable, after the construction the winding, twisting hill country scenery made it all worth while.  Near Vanderpool heading north on 187 for a few miles we then stopped at the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum.  Some very nice bikes here, mostly British makes and a few American and Metric bikes.  Some very nice examples of early motorcycle design.  Leaving the LSMM we hopped back on FM 337 into Medina continuing south on Hwy 16 stopping at the Apple Orchard store and restaurant for lunch.  Then into Bandera where the ride was officially over and some stopped in at 11th Street Cowboy bar for some good ole country music and camaraderie.

I think a good time was had by all…. You should have been there.
