Amarillo Ride May 1-5, 2008
This is the second multi-day
ride the club has undertaken, and it was again a real good ride! On Thursday
morning the group gathered at the Cavern Inn on I-10 near Boerne, a favorite
breakfast haunt before rides. Little Jon had all the details planned, the maps
to hand out, and last minute discussions while we had a good breakfast to fill
us up for our epic journey. (Anyone who has gone on a ride with this club knows
that the eating is always good, and that was certainly true on this trip). The
crew for the journey was:
- Little Jon Matthews,
Leader (group Mother). Man with the most decorated bike.
- Bob and Malva Burrahm (Bob
is stationed in China doing SwRI business and they came all the way over for
this ride. Good to see them again. He took the long distance award by a
huge margin, and they both relayed many interesting stories about their stay
in China during the trip. Bob rented a Harley for the ride.)
- Dennis Scheidt and Jim
LaGrone (Jim is Dennis’ son-in-law and came over from Houston for the ride.
He rode a rented Goldwing, a great bike when you figure out how to turn off
the reverse. After riding with Jim for a couple days, and him buying a
couple rounds of beer, we held an impromptu club meeting in Sweetwater and
voted Jim in unanimously as a new club member. Dennis wins the Senior Rider
award, again!)
- Daniel and Margie Garcia
(Daniel was our sweeper and showed off his new ride, a Honda ST 1300. He
got a little perturbed when I told him I could smoke him with my 1982 Honda
750.....Margie is our most consistent female and is always a hoot on group
rides.)
- Dwaine Smith and Glenn
Penna (This was the first multi-day club ride for both these guys. Glenn
was the only one who rode the trip without a windshield, which was a tough
haul especially in the windy plains up north. Dwaine’s Vulcan is pretty new
for him, and he’s still working on locating the blinker “off” switch.....)
- Art Nicholls and Steve
Clay (These guys decided to iron butt the first day, getting up in the dark
Friday morning and riding the first 280 miles to Sweetwater to meet the rest
of us for breakfast. Then they hopped back on for the 260 mile run with the
rest of us to Amarillo. They win the stud awards.)
- Scott Mullin (winner of
the oldest bike in the group award, plus best hat award, and, Best Hat
Bouncing Down the Highway award.)
