1st Annual
“Ride for the Kids”

Sunday, April 10, 2005

This charity ride was for the Christus Santa Rosa Childern's Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.  About 35 bikes and 50 riders took part in this fundraiser.  We left San Antonio with SAPD police escort under threatening clouds 10:45 Sunday morning.  Somehow stayed out of rain the entire trip.  Went thru some scenic Texas hill country including Castroville, Medina Lake, Kerrville and Boerne with local police blocking off intersections for us.  Total of 125 miles with a rest stop for picture taking just outside of Boerne.  This was our first ride in a large group and Brian and I were close to the front.  One rider near the back went down and his bike was picked up by our following trailer.  He appears to be o.k. and, while seen walking about, was taken to the hospital for precautions.  We saw a lot of road kill especially deer and you had to watch out for the buzzards.   The road frequently went from two lanes to one with improved shoulder to just one with no shoulder and you had to watch your speed.  We had a camera man on a Wing ahead of us taking pictures from the side of the road.  Then, he would somehow catch up and pass us to set up again to take another picture.  Since we were hitting 70 he was lucky there were no troopers out our way.  At the end of the ride we dined at the Back Porch Restaurant in Boerne.   Alamo Cycle-Plex provided a number of items for door prizes and with three cases of  aerosol "Honda" degreaser we thought one of us would get a can, but they called out 36 names and we missed out.  The best part of the ride was the Medina area where it got downright chilly as you went up and down the hills like on a roller coaster ride.  Click on any picture to get full screen view.
